The Specialist Technical Underwriter Trainer will be responsible for the development, facilitation, implementation, and ongoing work to support Life Underwriting and Operations training plans and programs.  Responsible for the delivery of targeted training and coaching either directly or through Managers and Team Leads, to ensure the quality of insurance operations, service, underwriting decisions and procedures to achieve our customer service and business objectives, minimizing risk to the organization and promoting a culture of learning. Maintain strong Underwriting skills through continued education and Underwriting team engagement and setting example of underwriting excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to identify training needs; develop and implement action plans for training.
  • Identify and deliver training and coaching solutions, adapting presentation style to audience in order to maximize understanding and retention.
  • Analyze effectiveness of training.
  • Continually review and identify the knowledge and skills within the areas of support to ensure training and development needs are addressed.
  • Deliver training to underwriters and Operations in a virtual environment.
  • Provide ongoing support to underwriters; Ensure new hire underwriters are ready for approval authority by having team review files and provide second sign-off’s during 6-8 week onboarding period.
  • Work with Chief Underwriter, Medical Director, Claims and UW Quality Audit to identify underwriting concerns, identify gaps and recommend actions. Create/modify content as needed.
  • Participate in department projects/initiatives when needed.
  • Mentor and review of newly trained underwriter caseload to ensure understanding of current underwriting process and procedures.
  • Review life insurance applications within the limits of authority, including all underwriting requirements and other evidence of insurability to determine acceptability and to detect and deter attempts to defraud the company.
  • Order only additional requirements which are appropriate and necessary for the assessment of the risk.
  • Make appropriate decisions on cases within approval authority. Through the referral process, recommend specific course or action or final decision on applications which are outside approval authority or where the complexity exceeds the individual experience level.

Qualifications

Education 

BS/BA Degree preferred or applicable experience with industry coursework (LOMA, CLU, FALU)

Experience/Knowledge

7-10 years of brokerage underwriting experience including large case underwriting, financial underwriting, and handling of complex medical substandard cases.

        

Experience in coaching, mentoring and training underwriters.

          

Skill/Attributes

Enthusiastic and knowledgeable about underwriting.

Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills to inspire and engage learners, alongside ability to create engaging, innovative and precise training materials.

Strong organization and time management skills to prioritize and set goals and to manage day to competing priorities.

Ability to communicate training needs using various communication methods such as computer based, interactive e-learning, traditional classroom, etc.

Demonstrated proficiency in MS Office Suite

Ability to adapt to highly changing environment

Ability to manage multiple priorities in a demanding environment

Experience in delivering projects (with little guidance) while working and communicating effectively with and through various department representatives and levels of management

Results oriented, drive and embrace change

Ability to proactively identify, communicate and resolve issues across various levels and functions in the organization

Advanced interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with senior leaders and vendors, negotiate outcomes and manage priorities

Skilled in use of modern technology to develop training modules needed in online/virtual platforms

Continuous Improvement mindset

PC knowledge to include Brainshark, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Must be able to travel to Frederick, MD to deliver training as needed

 

What’s in it for you?

 

The expected hiring compensation range for this position is $104,300 - $143,450 annually. 

 

The total compensation package for this position may include other elements, such as a sign-on bonus, long term incentives, and annual bonuses.  This role is eligible to participate in the Legal & General America Annual Incentive Plan. The current target payment for the position is 20% of base salary, modified for corporate and individual performance. Bonuses are pro-rated based on start date.  This role has 20 vacation days and 10 sick days that are accrued on a bi-weekly basis. Employees also have 9 paid holidays throughout the calendar year.
